Annotated text: Roro, The Grain of the Voice

As part of the New Commissions Writers programme for 2026, each writer will publish an annotated text drawn from a larger reader the group has been close-reading as part of the year-long programme.

Writer Roro has selected and annotated the text The Grain of the Voice, 1972, by Roland Barthes.

Roro is a writer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Their work braids the theoretical, the lyrical, and the personal to think through the strange textures of contemporary life. At its centre is a preoccupation with crossing thresholds, and how language might reach toward the very experiences that exceed its limits. Recent writing has appeared in arts publications and gallery exhibitions, and they regularly self-publish on Substack. They have previously held a residency with RM Gallery. Alongside their Chartwell Trust New Commissions residency, they are currently also developing Edge of Heaven, a long-form essay on mystical practice and Internet sexuality.
