Sriwhana Spong

Lac, black pigment, dimensions variable
Edition of 6

Employing the characteristics of female medieval mysticism, Spong explores place, history and the body. Working sculpture, film, writing, performance, dance, and sound, Spong’s artistic practice responds to global homogeneity through the advent of colonisation and capitalism. The materials present themselves through ‘a personal orchestra’ (a term coined by the artist) to straddle the vexed space of toxic consumption and joyfulness.

For the Artspace Aotearoa edition series, Spong has created a formalist sculpture assemblage that centres the common soda can.
